Resort On The Hill - Hillburi

Hillburi, also known as The Resort On The Hill is an exclusive resort and getaway destination in Aburi that hosts beautiful weddings, work retreats, conferences and similar events.

The entire place has a tropical natural theme that is super relaxing; big windows, beautiful views and quiet spaces.

Because it’s super close to the city (for example, its a 45 minute drive from East Legon), it’s a favourite for day trips too. They arrange only airport pickups at a fee, but if you can’t get there on your own, its a ¢35 Uber ride from the mall on a good day.

There’s a bar, a pool, a restaurant and a playground for kids which are fully open to the public/day visitors. For in-house guests, management can arrange tours and day-trips to visit nearby attractions, like the Aburi Botanical Gardens which is just a few minutes drive away.

Check In is at 2:00pm and Check Out at 12:00pm(Dont forget your ID!)

There are 11 rooms in all, under 5 categories:

  1. Standard Double Room With Balcony (King Size Bed) - $125

  2. Superior Double Room (King Size Bed) - $150

  3. Standard Double Room With Balcony (2 Double Beds) - $125

  4. Compact Double Room (Double Size Bed) - $125

  5. Superior Double Room With Balcony (Queen Size Bed) - $150

I got a Superior Double Room for $150 a night. The room was big with a rustic theme - think wood and stone with warm lights. The towels and bed linen are changed every 2 days so try not to be wasteful (But if you request a sheet or towel change, you’ll get it). I loved that my room had huge windows facing both Accra and the mountains - the view in the morning was so beautiful! All their rooms are big enough for 2 and come with a Flat-Screen TV, Satellite Channels, Air Conditioning, Free WiFi, a Mini Bar and a Tea & Coffee Facility.

All rooms are non-smoking, so you’ll need to go outside to smoke. If your room has a balcony, you can smoke there.

(Each room has a view of the mountain range. To see pictures of the rest of the rooms, check their website)

My favourite feature here is without a doubt the infinity pool which overlooks the Akuapim mountain range (because wine and poolsides are a Baby Girl vibe)

The resort is really big on providing “quiet spaces” and this area is part of their quiet zones so it’s very calm and quiet. It has such a relaxing vibe and I was lucky enough to go at a time where the weather was good. It’s free to use for guests and is open from early morning till 6pm.

The pool, like all other facilities, is open to day-visitors too, so you can 100% just spend the day lounging by it and head back to Accra.

The current day-visit rates are:

• Weekdays - ¢60 for adults, ¢40 for children under 12
• Weekends & Public Holidays - ¢70 for adults, ¢50 for children under 12.

It’s 4-7ft deep, and you’re advised to swim at your own risk because there are no lifeguards so please if you can’t swim, stay at the poolside or in the 4ft zone.

Sidenote: The whole is a perfect photo backdrop. To use the space for professional photos you need to contact the hotel (it’s ¢500 hour for 5 people. ¢150 per extra person) .

Breakfast is open to the public (non-guests) on Fridays to Sundays only from 7:30am to 9:45am. It’s available throughout the week and free for in-house guests during that same time frame. There is no buffet, but they have 4 a-la-carte options ranging from ¢50-¢60.
The rest of the menu is pretty standard - they have burgers, chicken, beef, lebanese, pizza, seafood, sandwiches and wraps.

On the first night I got the grilled prawns from their daily specials menu and they were amazing! I took a lot of pictures which I lost after I somehow locked myself out of my phone later that night (very very very long story) but you need to take my word for it on this. You could literally taste the butter!

I really liked the Coco Chicken too. It’s chicken cooked in coconut cream sauce. The sauce has just enough pepper to keep it from being sickly sweet but not enough to change the taste. The chicken bits were so soft and spicy, but not in a way that it clashed with the coconut cream. Definitely a new favorite.
My steak was a bit overdone but it was still nice. I paired it with God’s direct gift to man, garlic bread (their garlic bread is the hard/toasted type).

I’m not too big on desserts generally (I’ll eat it if it’s available and I need a sugar rush but I never really go out of my way to order it) but whats a mini-holiday without a new routine! Tried their chocolate cake with ice cream and it was definitely worth it!

Its important to note, the kitchen closes at 7:00pm on weekdays and 9:00pm on weekends for in-house guests, so make sure to get your orders in before then. You can pre-order to be served at a later time - for example you can order before it closes and ask to be served at 9:30pm on a weekday. For non-guests, the resort closes at 6:00pm on weekdays and 9:00pm on weekends, so by extension the kitchen does too.

  1. Westminster Breakfast (2 fried eggs, bacon or sausage, grilled tomato, mushrooms, potatoes, baked beans, toast and tea) - 💸¢60

  2. New Yorker breakfast (2 scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage, potatoes, pancakes & syrup, toast and tea - 💸¢60
